Headteacher's Thoughts and Updates

TUESDAY 7th FEBRAURY

RUGBY TOURNAMENTS CANCELLED:  Both tournaments at Scarborough Rugby Club this week cancelled due to the weather.  No rugby for Year 11 today and not for Year 10 on Thursday either.

MONDAY 6th FEBRUARY

Heating on.  Some gritting done and more going down.  School OPEN.

Very cold outside.  Please wear a coat.

Mr Dickinson

SUNDAY 5th FEBRUARY

SNOW:  At the moment I expect that school will be OPEN AS USUAL tomorrow.  I will be on-site early in the morning for a final check.  Keep an eye on the website or listen to Yorkshire Coast Radio or Radio York for early morning updates.  Parents/Carers and Staff: Please keep your mobile phone on for SMS Text alerts.

PLEASE ASSUME THAT SCHOOL WILL BE OPEN UNLESS YOU ARE INFORMED OTHERWISE.

FRIDAY 3rd FEBRUARY

SNOW IS FORECAST.  I have been asked several times today whether I have seen the forecast for weekend weather ... and if school will be open on Monday.  Let's wait and see what happens.

If the snow comes, please assume that school is OPEN unless I inform you otherwise.  I will not close school unless absolutely unavoidable.

IF school was closed it would be announced on Yorkshire Coast Radio and Radio York and I would send an SMS text alert to parents, carers and staff.

I will also give announcements and updates here on my blog.

FRIDAY 3rd FEBRUARY

YEAR 8 REWARDS EVENT:  Popped in to the A-List rewards event for Year 8 at just the right time - Pizzas were being delivered.  Stayed for a while and managed to get a slice for myself!  A lovely atmosphere.  Hard working, successful students having a good time together.  Well done everyone.  Keep it up.  Hope to see you at the next event.

THURSDAY 2nd FEBRUARY

TUESDAY 31st JANUARY

TERM TIME HOLIDAYS.  We would discourage parents/carers from taking holidays during term time because students' absence may impact on their learning & progress.  Please remember that requests for holidays during term time must be submitted on the official form (available from Student Reception) and accompanied by written statement explaining why the holiday needs to be taken during the school term.  Holidays taken during school time without approval from school would be recorded as unauthorised absence.

MONDAY 30th JANUARY

CHAMBER CHOIR gave another excellent performance at St Oswald's Church yesterday.  Service attended and led by Rt Rev'd Richard Frith, Bishop of Hull.  Well done everyone - Lovely voices blending together to create a great sound.  Your contribution was appreciated by all.

THURSDAY 26th JANUARY

THE ZONE:  Filey Town Mayor joined us this afternoon to officially open 'The Zone' where our Student Mentors are based.  Student Mentors were a real credit to the school, demonstrating the maturity, communication skills, positive attitudes and good role model behaviour that led to them being selected for the role.  Well done to all mentors - I was so proud to be there to see you showing why you are mentors and so proud of you!

Thanks to Mr Hindley and Mrs Wainwright for their hard work as coordinators of the student mentoring project.  Thanks to Cameron and Callum from the 'Creative Digital Media Club' for taking quality photographs to mark the occasion.  Thanks also to representatives of Tesco for joining us as part of their valued continuing support for student mentoring at Filey School.

WEDNESDAY 25th JANUARY

YEAR 7 A-LIST:  I am SO impressed!  Review of reports from the end of last term shows more Year 7 students on the A-List since October.  The number of students qualifying for the next rewards event because of lots of A grades for 'Application to Learning' has DOUBLED from the previous half-term.  We now need to organise an event that will include over 40 students.  Well done to all!  I hope to see even more Year 7 students gaining such a reward after the next reports in February.
