About the school

The school is situated on the outskirts of Filey Town, an unspoilt Edwardian seaside resort with a population of 7,500. Our partner schools are Filey Juniors (including Filey Infants), Hunmanby Primary School, Sherburn Primary School and Hertford Vale Primary School. We also take many students from out of area. Filey School is an 11 to 16 mixed comprehensive of approximately 820 students. The school realises the comprehensive ideal by providing an appropriate education for students of varying abilities and aptitudes. All children are expected to give of their best and to fulfil their true potential. OFSTED deemed us to be a ‘good and improving’ school in 2007. We now aim to be outstanding.

In September 2005, our school was designated a Technology College. This followed a remarkable fund-raising effort which resulted in the school raising the full £50,000 required to apply for Specialist School status, without resort to the Government’s Partnership Fund which helps schools who struggle to secure sponsorship. Key sponsors include McCain Foods and Amicus, the engineering union, who are keen to see the development of high quality courses to provide work and training opportunities in engineering and technology in the area. The £50,000, the result of wonderful support from the town and villages we serve, complimented the extra Government funding which amounts to over £1,000,000 over 4 years to invest in our students’ education and facilities. Technology Colleges have a special focus on Maths, Science, Design and Technology and ICT which drives up standards across every curricular area. In a school such as ours there is naturally a very wide spread of ability.

In Year 7 students are placed in banded form groups, based on information about prior attainment supplied by our partner primary schools. One group is taught by the School Improvement Leader (Year 7) for most subjects and is given intensive support and help with literacy, numeracy and social skills. Students will be set for some subjects in Year 7. From Year 8 onwards more subjects introduce setting and this increases as students progress through the school. Our standards are high and we insist that students behave in a polite, considerate and orderly way. School rules are brief and to the point, and they are based around the concept of respect for others. You will notice that we have made a conscious decision to call our youngsters students, not pupils. This is to emphasise that we expect them to come here to want to learn and become independent learners who discipline themselves.

The School houses an indoor swimming pool that is available for our own students, the students of partner schools, the general public and also for private club bookings. It also has an excellent Library and a dedicated Performing Arts Studio which have been built in recent years.

Over a number of years we have explored and developed links with industry and commerce, and industrial links have been welcomed into a wide variety of subject areas. At the same time a number of our staff have gone into industry and business, in order to gain a wider perspective, and to bring the lessons of industry and commerce into school.
