Headteacher's Thoughts and Updates
TUESDAY 15th MAY FIRST BIG EXAM TODAY - Most Year 11 students sat their Religious Studies exam this afternoon. My subject - I hope it went well! Mr Dickinson MONDAY 14th MAY GCSE EXAMS START THIS WEEK: Exams take place in the school hall at front of school and some will run over to the end of the school day. It would be appreciated if visitors to school, including parents/carers collecting children at the end of the day, could avoid unnecessary noise so that students are not distracted. Thank you Mr Dickinson SUNDAY 13th MAY UKFESTIVAL4STARS: Spent the day at Scarborough Spa with over 20 talented students who were entered in a range of categories of the Scarborough heats of this national talent competition. Lots of waiting around but students were a real pleasure to be with, behaved impeccably and really did the school proud. We will be back at the Spa for the regional heats on 10th June because the following winners are through to the next round: Musical Solo (14 & under): FRANCESCA DEVOS Musical Solo (15+): TYLER SMITH Musical Group: CHAMBER CHOIR Star Group: TYLER SMITH, BETH PRATT & THE SIXTEEN Well done to all who took part - I was incredibly proud of you all. You really showed what we are capable of at Filey School. Mr Dickinson WEDNESDAY 9th MAY MISS DAY - THANK YOU AND BEST WISHES: Miss Day who has done a great job organising and managing work experience and work placements is leaving NYBEP to take up a new role elsewhere. We appreciate all her hard work for Filey School students and her wider contribution to our school and we wish her every success in the future…though I’m sure we will be seeing her again! Mr Dickinson TUESDAY 8th MAY ON THIS DAY IN 1945 the country’s press reported that Prime Minister Winston Churchill confirmed the end of war in Europe. A day of great elation across the country celebrating a victory that it was hoped would make a difference…but we don’t need war to make a difference. I recently attended a conference with the Archbishop of York and I was reminded of something Mahatma Gandhi said: “BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE”. The Archbishop and his Youth Trust are encouraging all young people to make positive changes in their communities by acting to make a difference. Perhaps we could all learn from Gandhi - If we do nothing, nothing will change. BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE. Mr Dickinson THURSDAY 3rd MAY YOUNG MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR 2012: New competition for our school. Lovely evening of talent from solo musicians and singers. Congratulations to all our finalists on the high standard of all performances. Thanks to guest adjudicators Mr G Walker, Mrs M Walker and Mrs M Chambers. Results as follows: LOWER SCHOOL RUNNER-UP: Rachael Francis, Year 8, Solo Guitar & Vocal, 'Scarborough Fair' - Traditional LOWER SCHOOL WINNER: Erin Hope, Year 9, Flute Solo, 'Sicilienne' - Maria Theresia Paradis UPPER SCHOOL RUNNER-UP: Katie Bell, Year 10, Vocal Solo, 'Underneath the Stars' - Kate Rusby UPPER SCHOOL WINNER: Tyla Poole, Year 10 Violin Solo, 'Ashokan Farewell' - Jay Ungar An excellent evening! I think we will do this again next year. Mr Dickinson |
